GAYA2014: 2 SECONDS

GAYA (Gelar Budaya or Cultural Exhibition) is an annual arts and culture production by SMU Komunitas Indonesia. Since its inception back in 2006, GAYA has consistently delivered its promises to showcase the rich cultural pieces of Indonesia, e.g. dance and music items, to the world and foster a strong bond and togetherness among SMUKI members.

Our last installment, GAYA 2013 : RETROSPECT showcased two groundbreaking ways: a freshly different interpretation of our previous items and performances and a reflection of our growth in culture as SMU's foremost Indonesian organization. In this show, we set forth how one generation advanced to another generation while introducing our first fusion dance with the combination of traditional dance namely SAMAN with HIP-HOP, a type of modern dance. SAMAN hip-hop is the first item to possess both Indonesian root as well as contemporary trait.

Retaining our spirit of SMUKI, GAYA 2014 has come up again with a captivating musical drama titled "2 SECONDS".

In alignment with the theme "Made in SIngapore", the storyline is inspired by the instilled value in Singaporean, which is "Kiasu", a custom to be very anxious of losing out because of incapable to do something that others are capable of. Through GAYA-2 Seconds, we portray how many humans failed to pursue their genuine passion due to the pressure of conforming to the ideal societal expectations and instead lured into a world of fortune which promised false security. We hope that through this production individuals could see another perspective of life that one may deviate from society rules or norms and have the courage to follow one's heart. Stay true to oneself and most importantly, believe in the choices one has made.

The drama depicted a journey of a young woman who must decide to pursue either success or happiness. In just 2 seconds, she must make the decision regarding which path to go. In addition to its fascinating plot, we still preserve our Indonesian heritage by showcasing various Indonesian culture through songs and combination of traditional dances with a twist of modern element. Our graceful yet passionate dances blended with uplifting vocals woven in a heart-breaking love story has won the audience hearts and received copious round of applause.
